April 24 — Anniversary of Foundation of National Assembly. August 30 — Anniversary of Independence War. September 29 —Anniversary of Foundation of Turkish Republic. Samsun is situated between two river deltas which jut into the Black Sea at the end of an ancient route from Cappadocia. Samsun has a long history and its myths go back even longer. According to ancient myths the delta east of Samsun was the land of the Amazons. The geographer Strabo (64 BC-21 AD) describes the Amazons as a people of female warriors. The town itself was founded in the 7th century BC as the colony Amisos by settlers from Miletus. It was later a part of the Pontus realm.
Nowadays Samsun is the capital of Samsun Province with 1.2 million inhabitants, and the largest Turkish Black Sea city. During the excavations carried out around Samsun many artefacts were brought to light which are exhibited now in the Samsun Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. As well as its historical heritage which formed a cradle for the young Republic of Turkey, Samsun has many natural riches. These include its vibrant green forests and plateaux, a long coastline with unique sand, and two rivers.
It is known too for its, thermal waters, especially the Havza Thermal Springs.
