Drive along the coast northwards of Varna to Balchik to visit the former summer residence of Queen Mary of Romania – “The Quiet Place” Palace and the Botanical Gardens. Balchik is a lovely small town on the Black Sea coast. Queen Mary of Romania was a daughter of the Duke of Edingburgh, son of Queen Victoria, and a granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. She gave birth to the last Romanian king – King Carol. “The Quiet Nest” Palace was Queen’s favorite place and she summered here from 1931 to 1938. The palace is surrounded by a beautiful park, containing a variety of fountains, ponds, colonnades and water mills. The Botanical gardens were laid out in 1955 and contain over 3000 species of exotic plants. Local restaurant welcomes you for lunch. Continue to Kaliakra Cape to see the Kaliakra Fortress on the Kaliakra Cape, which cuts picturesquely deep into the sea. The narrow peninsular was the domain of the Principality of Karvuna and the last Bulgarian fortress to be conquered by the invading Ottomans in 14th century. Besides the preserved historical remains the cape is popular as a nature reserve. Rejoin your coach and return back to Varna.
